CriSyS is currently seeking a Full-Time CARES Clinician to join our team in Charlotte, North Carolina.

What is the CARES Program?

In FY 2021, the Charlotte City Council approved $1.2m to launch the city’s first civilian response program for low level, non-violent 911 calls for service. The city launched the Community Assistance: Response, Engage, Support (CARES) Team in December of 2022, with one unit consisting of two clinicians responding to calls in the Central and Metro Divisions of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The team responds to 911 calls mainly related to homelessness and mental health. The team is embedded within CMPD and works closely with officers, the program coordinator through the city, and other community stakeholders.

As a CARES Clinician, you will respond to 911 calls for service, and proactively engage with individuals in the field. On the calls, you will assess, evaluate, and perform therapeutic intervention techniques, making appropriate referrals and developing a plan for the continuation of services for individuals served. You will also be responsible for incident documentation and will serve as the on-site resource for information and will collaborate with involved parties including families, friends, and community partners.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work in person Monday-Friday from 7AM-3PM, with hours subject to change. Majority of time will be spent in the field, driving a city-issued vehicle.
  • Respond directly to 911 calls for service dispatched to the team through the 911 Communications Center or officers of CMPD
  • Proactively engage with individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness in the field, completing needs assessments, and making appropriate community referrals.
  • Follow up with consumers to determine if further interventions or referrals are needed.
  • Transport consumers as appropriate to service providers in the field.
  • Effectively perform interventions, including de-escalation, needs assessments, planning, treatment recommendation and implementation.
  • Show referral knowledge and make appropriate mental health and non-mental health referrals within the community.
  • Determine the need for an emergency petition and/or alternative psychiatric evaluation.
  • Ability to address child, adolescent, adult, dual-diagnosis, co-occurring, and elderly populations.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the medical implications when working with substance abuse consumers
  • Collaborate with and provide education to community partners including local law enforcement, fire department.
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborate with the CMPD program coordinator to address programmatic needs and developments.
  • Appropriately and effectively document all services rendered.
  • Abide by all Federal, State, and local regulations, including mandatory reporting and duty to warn.

CARES Team Preferences

  • Ability to work in unstructured environments
  • Experience working in homeless services and/or working with people in crisis
  • Experience working in the community and assisting diverse clients
  • Experience working with immigrant and English as a Second Language communities
  • Experience assessing suicidal/homicidal ideation
  • Strong communication skills
  • Flexibility and patience

What We Require:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related field of study and 1-2 years of community-based experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of current automobile insurance.

**Current clinical license in the State of North Carolina: LCSW(A) or LCMHC(A) is preferred but not required.
